tangerines are small oranges that can be easily grown in your garden and will reward you with great tasting fruits so other than looking at all the different varieties of tangerines you can grow we will also take a look at one of the most common varieties of tangerines that you can grow in your garden so what up tangerines? tangerines are small oranges that are very easy to grow and are very prolific growers the make a great snack and taste absolutely delicious and here are some of the common Mandarin oranges that you can grow and in today's episode that will be looking at dancy Mandarin tangerine which is one of the old classic varieties that's not only easy to grow but also tastes absolutely delicious and as you will find out is a very prolific grower as well so the dancy tangerine starts ripening in about December and will continue to ripen thru December and January and can be picked anytime once the fruits turn orange as you can see here so let's start with the first point about growing citrus plants including tangerines and that's the fertilizer schedule that you need to follow so just like other citrus trees these tangerines require fertilizer to be applied throughout the growing season and they'll do best when you apply the fertilizer as per the schedule that you see on your screen and I've been following the schedule for most of my citrus trees and they seem to do a great job of supporting the overall health of the plant throughout its growing season and that's evident by looking at the fruits that it has produced now all of your tangerines might not ripen at the same time which is a good thing because you can start harvesting your tangerines once the color turns orange and you can keep doing that for all your ripe fruits that way you have a supply of fruits coming in for at least about three months while the oranges ripen now citrus trees do not need any chilling hours so if you you are in the citrus zone or the citrus belt where you can grow citrus trees I would highly recommend that you grow citrus trees instead of trying to grow other fruits like apples or cherries which require chilling time now although you can get away with growing apples or cherries in the citrus belt which require less chilling hours the quality of the fruit that you'll be getting when you grow apples or cherries apricots nectarines will not be that high so instead grow delicious citrus fruits like tangerines as you can see here all citrus fruits are very healthy rich in vitamin C and are great for your overall health so the next thing to talk about is what kind of pests attack the citrus plant Now the citrus plant does need protection from pests like leaf miners if you watch the video link on your screen right now you will be able to see a detailed explanation of how to get rid of leaf miners on your citrus plant now the dancy tangerine that you see here is a very commonly available tangerine variety and you can find them in most garden stores very easily they are a classic favorite they taste really good very sweet they do have some seeds so if you're looking for a seedless variety you need to try a different variety however even in this Dancy tangerine you'll find a few seeds here and there but not as much as something that would bother you so overall this dancy tangerine is a great combination of flavor taste and prolific growth and this is what makes the Dancy tangerine one of the most common tangerines still being grown here so I wanted to show you how the Dancy tangerine looks like when it opened up as you can see the skin is very thin and that's pretty easy to peel and once you open the Tangerines you can see a couple of seeds here and there now some of these pods do have seeds in them some don't and as I mentioned if you're looking for a seedless variety this is not a seedless variety but it will gave you a really unique flavor a classic flavor that you will enjoy the final tip about citrus plants including tangerines is pruning now as you can see this plant has grown like crazy during this growing season so it's very necessary to prune it when pruning it remove the dead branches and make sure that the tree forms and nice canopy and prepares itself for the next growing season so that's all there is to growing tangerines and I hope you enjoyed this video of watching the dancey tangerines grow and I would like to know from you what kind of tangerines do you grow in your garden do let me know and I'll see you again soon happy gardening
