THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO GROWING GREAT PEPPERS

hello everybody in today's episode we are going to see how to grow peppers we will go over the growing techniques how to fertilize them how to take care of your pepper plants and we will also see a lot of varieties of peppers that you can grow so sit back and enjoy so there are a lot of pepper varieties that you can grow in your garden here are some of those so those are the most common pepper varieties that you will usually grow so let's get started so peppers can be planted in the ground or in containers they do great in both if you're planting in the ground you need to start your seeds indoors six weeks before the last frost in this episode we will take a look at planting peppers in containers so we will be planting a green bell pepper variety today the name of the pepper is Big Bertha so for a single pepper plant you need a container about this wide about 16 inches or so gently remove the plant from the provided peat pot and then what you want to do is just stimulate the roots a little bit that will cause it to grow really well make sure you compact and remove the air around the plant and once that's done all we need to do is put some mulch I'm using a guava leaf mulcher you could use any mulch that you want I just have a lot of guava leaves lying in my backyard and they make pretty good mulch pepper plants need to be staked now I'm just using a regular stake that's found and most of the garden stores if you are in a very windy area you need to secure these stakes by a couple more stakes you start the irrigation for your container and make sure it works if you haven't switched to drip irrigation yet well maybe it's time it's a very efficient way of watering your plants so now we are going to plant another uh proper plant this time in a whiskey barrel and because of whiskey barrel is so big it can easily accommodate two pepper plants and we're going to plant my favorite pepper plant the ancho poblano so the technique of planting these plants is the same for a peat pot that this plant comes in the instructions say is to plant the pot directly however I think it's best if you remove the peat covering and stimulate the roots a little bit I've always found that if you stimulate the roots before planting your plants are going to do really well so what I'm doing is gently removing the peat pot from the bottom freeing up those roots and then what I'm gonna do is push upward so that the plant comes right out of the peat pot just loosen up the roots from all sides this plant is ready and do the same thing with the other plant one reason I like growing in whisky barrels is because it lets see you plant two or even three of these medium-sized pepper plants in one barrel so let's plant these two pepper plants making sure that we compact the soil around the plants just like that make sure that the roots of the plant are well buried in the soil and then compact around the roots of the plant and now it's time to stake them so another way to stake paper plans is by using long garden stakes and then tie the pepper plants as they grow so those steaks look good and as a pepper plant grows you can add more steaks if you want to so mulching is another important part of planting your pepper plants the mulch will eventually decompose and give a valuable nutrition to your pepper plants this time again I'm using the guava leaf mulch now once the plant has been planted I'm going to put the drip irrigation sticks back and now it's time for the first watering now the first watering of a newly planted plant is very critical and I'm going to show you exactly what you need to do to make sure you give it adequate nutrition have some seaweed extract here I'm going to shake it up and put two tablespoons in this watering can see if it has a lot of minerals that your plants will love and I'm also going to take some fish fertilizer this is a hydrolyzed fish fertilizer it's of much better quality than the regular fish fertilizer and I'm gonna add two capfuls of the fish fertilizer to this mix and all you need to do now is fill this watering can with water and what this plant starting mix will do is it will invigorate your plant it will make sure it has all the nutrients that it needs to get to a nice start fish and seaweed are very very useful fertilizers they contain nutrients that all the plants need you'll be amazed at what a difference seaweed and fish make once you start using them especially with blooms I think fish fertilizer works really well for blooms so make sure that you're giving your plants a lot of fish fertilizer during the blooming season and that works well for all plants for peppers tomatoes almost any plant that you can imagine now make sure you what are the plans are really well drenching them completely you want to drench the leaves and the root area and do this at least two times now pepper plants need to be watered on a regular basis so the drip irrigation system works very well for pepper plants and containers as far as fertilizing goes pepper plants need to be fertilized every three weeks and use a tomato or pepper fertilizer because they contain calcium and also promote blooms which are essential for peppers but two tablespoons of Epsom salt in a gallon of water and give the pepper plants a nice bath they will love it so let's talk about the diseases and pests that affect pepper plants now I'm not going to talk about all the diseases and pests you could just search the web for that but I will go over the common ones forms like tomato hornworm and cut worms are enemies of the pepper plant to get rid of them just use neem oil now blossom end rot isn't the problem that affects pepper plants to see how to get rid of blossom end rot please click the link below and it will take you to the my video which illustrates how to tackle blossom end rot now for the fun part the hard work is done so let's watch how we can harvest different varieties of peppers in this section of the video purple fiesta peppers are nice to grow they look great the tastes great they're purple color add some really nice color to your dishes they give an abundant harvest so I highly recommend growing these purple Fiesta Peppers you'll be pleasantly surprised at how good they are purple peppers are healthy delicious and very easy to grow in containers when peppers form the green in color but they eventually change their color to yellow and that's when you know they are ready for harvest if they are partially yellow don't worry they will turn yellow completely once you harvest and keep them at room temperature now if you have an appetite for a very hot pepper try to grow the thigh pepper variety make no mistake this pepper is hot it's really hot and especially if you're making some dishes like Indian dishes or Thai dishes these peppers will add really good flavor to your food one good thing about the thigh pepper plant is that once you grow it you can keep growing it year after year it's more like a perennial and this plant has been growing for two years now all I do is every year change the container loosen the roots and plant it back and it seems to do very well banana peppers are usually not very hot but they have a very unique taste and that's what makes them so nice and banana peppers are of two types the one that you see here is a slightly larger variety the one in yellow that one and let's harvest this one and see it's actually a pretty big sized banana pepper the other banana peppers are slightly smaller and now let's harvest poblano peppers in my opinion poblano peppers have the best combination of heat and taste I just find it quite amazing it is really good no matter how you cook them you can stir-fry them you can fill them with all sorts of things and grill them they taste really good that's my son helping me with the harvest thank you very much and as you can see even this poblano has been growing in a container in this whiskey barrel and it the harvest looks pretty good so that pretty much summarizes this episode I hope you like the tips and I hope you also like the harvest videos and learn something from it and I'm sure that after watching this video you'll be eager to try out all the different pepper varieties that we have
