GROWING BEETS - CYLINDRA
In the plant profile series of videos
today we'll look at how to grow a beet
variety called cylindra so the regular shaped
beets that we grow look something like this: pretty much
oval and tapering towards the end however you'll see it that the cylindra
beets look a lot different
now this episode is not a comprehensive guide
to grow beets but in this episode we will look at how
this variety of beets called cylindra
which is a unique kind of beet be as you'll soon find out
can be easily grown in your garden The container we're using here
is a pretty small container and it contains the Pro Mix
HP growing medium which is a pretty good growing medium
and I have reviewed this growing medium in one of my previous videos as well
and what we have done here is that since this is a
soilless mix we have added some organic fertilizer
to this potting mix now I generally don't recommend
transplanting beets because I've seen that they don't grow as large when
transplanted
however I din't have space the season so I ended up transplanting
these beet seedlings so the organic fertilizer has helped
these seedlings grow to a really good size in 30 days
and then after forty days they start showing some definition
and are still growing really good at about fifty days
you can see it that the beets have just started forming
you can see at the base or the surface of the soil
the beets are being formed and this variety of
beets they grow like carrots they are pretty much
cylindrical and
they grow long, longer if your container size is deep
but as you can see my container was really not large
so I ended up getting shorter beets than I expected
so in exactly seventy days I saw that
the beets had grown to a size where it could be harvested
and I went ahead and harvested these cylindra beets
and one thing I wanted to share with you is that
beet greens are very healthy
you can eat the beet greens the leaves
as well as the beets themselves so how do I eat my beats
I put the greens in smoothies and I eat the beets raw
sliced they are terrific they taste really good
and are excellent for your health beets are also an excellent source of energy
so as you can see we planted this in December
and this was planted in the Promix HP with organic fertilizer
and we were able to harvest it and we got a really good harvest
from just a small container in a limited space
so I hope you enjoyed this episode of
watching this beet variety called cylindra
and I'd like to know from what varieties of
beets do you grow in your garden I'll see you again soon
happy gardening
